“New York Man Charged With Internet Extortion And Cyber Stalking”
Summary
Adam Paul Savader,
a 21-year-old boy from Great Neck, New York, sent anonymous text messages to 15
women. He used Google Voice and he told them that he had nude photographs of
them. He threatened the woman to send him more pictures, if not, he would send
the photographs to their friends and family. He also send some victims links to
a photo-sharing website, were the photos of the women had been posted.
Detectives from
the Ann Arbor Police Department received a complaint from a victim who told
them that she hade received threatening messages from a person who had stolen
nude photographs of her from her email account.
They investigated the case, and identify 15 victims. Savader got a
maximum penalty of five years’ in jail.
I think that the
most likely reason/cause for disinhibition which motivates the criminal is
dissociative anonymity and invisibility.
Dissociative
anonymity is when people move around the Internet, can choose who they want to
be. They can also change their identity, they can be anonymous. The anonymity
is one of the principle factors that create the disinhibition effect. When
people get the opportunity to separate their action on the Internet from their
normal lifestyle and person, the feel less vulnerable.
In online
environments, like Google Voice, it is impossible for people to see each other.
The invisibility gives people the courage to do things they never would done in
normal life.
In this case, I
think that these to causes are the most important, because he didn’t see the
people he texted, and the victims didn’t know who he was.
